Sullivan's Island beach - dog ordinance, license and seasonal hours

Sullivan's Island has no fenced off-leash dog park; the beach is the regulated off-leash space, and the rules split into two seasons. SUMMER, MAY 1 THROUGH SEPTEMBER 30: dogs off leash 5:00 a.m.-10:00 a.m.; NO DOGS ON THE BEACH AT ALL 10:00 a.m.-6:00 p.m.; dogs on leash 6:00 p.m.-5:00 a.m. WINTER, OCTOBER 1 THROUGH APRIL 30: dogs off leash 5:00 a.m.-noon; dogs on leash noon-5:00 a.m. LICENSE REQUIRED: Town Code Section 90-17 requires a Town dog license for ALL dogs on Sullivan's Island streets, private property or beaches - residents, visitors and day-trippers alike. Cost is $25.00 for Sullivan's Island residents (residency verified by the address on a valid South Carolina driver's license) and $50.00 for everyone else, plus a $10 handling fee for licenses processed by mail; a $2.00 discount applies for dogs certified through the American Kennel Club Canine Good Citizen program with the certificate presented at application. Licenses run through December 31 of the current year and are not prorated; renewal is due January 1. Applicants must submit a copy of a valid driver's license showing the current address and an updated rabies vaccination certificate from a licensed veterinarian - the Town will not accept rabies records within two weeks of expiration. Licenses are issued at Town Hall, 2056 Middle Street, Mon-Fri 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m.; frontdesk@sullivansisland.sc.gov; 843-883-3198. WASTE: state and Town law require the handler to collect and dispose of dog waste; bags are provided in parks and at beach paths. No activity, including loose dogs, is allowed in the dunes or near turtle nesting areas. Enforcement is by the Sullivan's Island Police Department.
