The Washout (1563 East Ashley Avenue beach access)

Public beach access on the east end of Folly Island, the island's best-known surf break. The City of Folly Beach lists it as an ADA-compliant access with ADA parking, restrooms, changing stations and beach access. The Washout parking lot has 126 spaces and is paid year-round at $3/hr or $12 all day; no parking in the Washout lot after 11 p.m. (10 p.m. for all other paid lots). Two smaller adjacent lots: 1587 E Ashley (14 spaces) and 1673 E Ashley (8 spaces), both $3/hr or $12 all day March-September and $2.50/hr or $10 all day October-February. A separate ADA-compliant access with parking and a beach ramp is at 1670/1671 E Ashley. Surfing rules: surfing without a leash is prohibited island-wide; from May 15 to September 15 surfing is prohibited 10 a.m.-6 p.m. between 2nd Street East and 3rd Street West (the designated swimming zone), which is well west of the Washout, so the Washout stays open to surfing; surfing is always prohibited within 200 feet of the fishing pier. Smoking is prohibited on the beach and beach accesses, including both sides of East Ashley Avenue at the Washout. Dogs are barred from the beach 10 a.m.-6 p.m. from May 1 through September 30, and must be leashed at all other times of year.
