Palmetto Islands County Park — Big Toy Playground

943-acre Charleston County park; entrance off Long Point Road near Horlbeck Creek. The Big Toy playground has a distinct toddler section for ages 5 and under and separate larger slide and climbing structures for ages 6 and up. ACCESSIBILITY: the playground has inclusive surfacing and accessible play structures; accessible picnic tables are concentrated at the shelters and at Big Toy; accessible parking throughout the park; wheelchairs available for checkout free, first-come first-served. There is no accessible route to the park office or to the grills. FENCED: the playground itself is not enclosed; the dog park is the fenced area in this park. SHADE: heavy natural shade from a mature tree canopy over the play area, plus adjacent covered picnic shelters — this is one of the few play areas here usable in midsummer. RESTROOMS: accessible restrooms at the meadow, open year-round. GATE FEE: $2 per person; free for children 2 and under and Gold Pass holders; educational groups $1.50 per person Monday-Friday. PARK HOURS: January-April 8 a.m.-sunset; May-August 8 a.m.-8 p.m.; September-December 8 a.m.-sunset; gate closes to incoming traffic 30 minutes before the park closes. Also on site: Nature Island with a 50-foot observation tower and a play area, 1.1 miles paved and 4.4 miles unpaved trails, tidal creek fishing dock, off-leash dog park with separate large- and small-dog areas (closed until 9 a.m. Tuesdays for maintenance), sand volleyball, kayak access to Horlbeck Creek, and bike rentals at $5 per hour or $15 per day from 10 a.m.
