THE ORDER OF OPERATIONS IS THE WHOLE POINT, and it catches nearly every new arrival: in South Carolina you pay the county vehicle property tax FIRST, then register. SCDMV states plainly: "You must pay the property tax bill to the county treasurer before you can register your vehicle in this state," and you bring the original paid receipt to SCDMV. STEP 1 — CHARLESTON COUNTY AUDITOR: contact the Auditor with the vehicle's VIN to have a tax bill generated. Auditor's main office 101 Meeting St., Charleston, SC 29402 (P.O. Box 614), phone (843) 958-4200, email MotorVehicle@CharlestonCounty.org, Mon–Fri 8:30 a.m.–5:00 p.m. The Auditor "calculates, creates and mails tax bills for real estate, mobile homes, motor vehicles, watercraft, aircraft and business-owned personal property" and maintains records on roughly 252,000 motor vehicles. The Auditor publishes an online Vehicle Tax Bill Request and a Tax Estimator — run the estimator before you move so the number is not a shock. STEP 2 — CHARLESTON COUNTY TREASURER: pay the bill, get the paid receipt. STEP 3 — SCDMV: register. BRING the out-of-state title, a completed Title Application (Form 400), valid ID, liability insurance information from a carrier "licensed to do business in SC," and the paid property tax receipt. PUBLISHED FEES as of 3 Sep 2026, from SCDMV: $250 Infrastructure Maintenance Fee (IMF, paid once per vehicle) + $15 title fee + $40 registration/plate = $305 total, and SCDMV notes this "does not include the county property tax." Registration renews every two years. Update your insurer with the SC address first — SCDMV lists that as step one. TIMING CAVEAT: the SCDMV page for vehicles does not itself state a deadline for registering, although the SCDMV licence page sets 45 days for the licence and 45 days is widely cited for vehicles. Because SCDMV does not publish a vehicle deadline on that page, no deadline is asserted here — call SCDMV at 803-896-5000 to confirm the window for your situation, and do not let it drift.

Jim farms seven Mount Pleasant neighborhoods specifically — not “the Charleston area.” That is the whole point of this index: one agent who knows which street floods, which floor plan appraises, and what the last eleven sales actually closed at, because he keeps the record himself.
