Pitt Street commercial block, Old Village

Mount Pleasant's original commercial street and still its most walkable retail block, roughly one to two blocks of storefronts at the 100 block of Pitt Street inside the Old Village Historic District. What is actually there now: Pitt Street Pharmacy (111 Pitt St), Out of Hand (113 Pitt St), Wine Shop OV (115 Pitt St), and the Post House inn and tavern (101 Pitt St, seven guest rooms, reworked in 2020). The Village Bakery at this location has closed. Parking is free on-street, parallel and angled, directly in front of the shops, with no meters and no garage; it is a small number of spaces and fills at lunch and on weekend mornings. The surrounding Old Village Historic District covers about 61.6 acres and just over 30 blocks, laid out before the automobile on a walkable grid bounded by Charleston Harbor, Shem Creek, Royall Avenue and McCants Drive; the Town notes it absorbed five earlier villages (Greenwich Village est. 1766, Hibben Ferry Tract est. 1770, Mount Pleasant Plantation est. 1808, Hilliardsville est. 1847, Lucasville est. 1853). Pitt Street dead-ends at the Pitt Street Bridge park, a former trolley and road causeway to Sullivan's Island now a walking pier over the marsh, which is why the block gets foot and bike traffic beyond its own customers.
