The Assessor appraises real property and administers the 4% legal residence special assessment. The county publishes: the legal residence exemption "is not automatic" — the owner must apply and "provide proof that you meet the qualifications and that your legal residence (domicile) is in Charleston County at the property in question." DEADLINE as published by the county: "typically January 15th of each year," and the county recommends "filing as early in the tax year as possible (spring to very early summer)." The county states the deadline is verified by postmark if mailed, or by actual date received if hand delivered. Applications may be filed online, in person, or by mail; the printable form is at charlestoncounty.gov/files/forms/tax/LegalRes4.pdf. ADDRESS NOTE: the county's own pages give the Assessor as 4050 Bridge View Dr., Suite 100, while the county office-locations page lists the Lonnie Hamilton III Public Services Building at 4045 Bridge View Dr. — the two Bridge View addresses are adjacent county buildings. The Assessor publishes no Mount Pleasant satellite office.
