SCDOT, Office of Alternative Delivery, with FHWA. Came out of the I-526 Lowcountry Corridor EAST Planning & Environmental Linkages study (completed mid-2022, Virginia Avenue in North Charleston to about US 17 in Mount Pleasant). Public hearing held May 2, 2023 at Mount Pleasant Town Hall; comment period closed May 17, 2023. FHWA signed the Finding of No Significant Impact on August 22, 2024. Delivery method is design-build; the design-build team selection process began Fall 2025. SCDOT states construction is anticipated to start in 2027 and last approximately three and a half years (checked Sept 4, 2026). WHAT CHANGES FOR A DRIVER: new ramps giving Wando Welch Terminal trucks a direct I-526 connection; SCDOT estimates truck share of Long Point Road traffic drops from 70% to 15%. The selected alternative retains existing operations at Long Point Road and Belle Hall Parkway, including the left turn. A multi-use path is planned along the east side of Long Point Road within project limits, existing Long Point Road sidewalk replaced, and a multi-use path replacing the sidewalk on the south side of Wando Park Boulevard. No public cost figure on the project site. Project office: 5605A Rivers Avenue, North Charleston (Gas Lite Square).
