2026 Charleston County Transportation Sales Tax referendum — November 3, 2026

Charleston County Council approved third and final reading of the 2026 Transportation Sales Tax ordinance on July 21, 2026, placing it on the November 3, 2026 ballot; ballot language was due to the SC Election Commission by August 17, 2026. If approved it would continue the existing 2004 half-cent tax when that program finishes collections, projected to occur in 2027. The program is projected to generate approximately $4.25 billion over 25 years, allocated $2.7 billion (63.57%) to Roadway Infrastructure, $858 million (20.19%) to Public Transit, and $690 million (16.24%) to the Greenbelt Program. Council also added ballot language requiring that all featured, intersection, pavement management and other projects "shall consider the inclusion of bicycle, pedestrian, and public transit access in the design process, as contextually appropriate." MOUNT PLEASANT ITEMS on the County's published draft project list: Johnnie Dodds Boulevard (US 17) and Houston Northcutt Boulevard intersection including Wingo Way and Mathis Ferry Road — $230,000,000; Long Point Road improvements including raising at Boone Hall Creek — $170,000,000; continued implementation of Mount Pleasant Way — $20,000,000; Whipple Road and Mathis Ferry Road intersection including Lucy Beckham High School — $8,000,000. NOTE: those figures come from the March 2026 DRAFT list; Council made post-second-reading adjustments in other parts of the county (adding $17M for a Palmetto Commerce Interchange noise wall, removing $12M at Ladson Rd/Miles Jamison Rd, removing $5M for railroad overpass preliminary engineering, cutting $2M from a Downtown Route Study, adding $2M for Huger St bike/ped).
